About

Howdy! I’m Alyssa, a modern mom living in the mountains of West Virginia with my sweetheart JDE, handsome son Jonah, and a slew of marvelous critters!

Here we hope to inspire others to take that first stride towards bettering their lives, and achieving their goals. Whether those goals be Homestead related, or not, I’m certain we will cover enough information that you will find something interesting here! (We’ll cover everything from growing your OWN organic food with limited space, foraging, processing/preserving, recipies, plenty of DIY’s, and SO much more as we come to it.)

In 2020 we started with an order of 22 day-old chicks from Cackle Hatchery, and began a small Rabbitry. Next my dear JDE plowed our first family garden. Then we bought, incubated, and hatched out our first batch of Jumbo Cotournix Quail, as well as some beautiful Japanese Ringneck Pheasants!

Factoring in the pigs we had already been raising, it all sounds magical, right?! Well…. wrong! We had several failures, despite JDE’s agricultural background, and our constant research/YouTube watching for advice from other established Homesteaders.

Even though there were failures, livestock losses, diseased tomato plants, and a few small overwhelming breakdowns on my part, there is GREAT NEWS!

We are STILL GOING, and conveniently for all of you, we’ve already made most of the rookie mistakes, and most importantly LEARNED from them! So, we are going to share our trails, errors, successes, and knowledge with you all.

What People Say

“Food security is not in the supermarket. It’s not in the government. It’s not at the emergency services division. True food security is the historical normalcy of packing it in during the abundant times, building that in-house larder, and resting easy knowing that our little ones are not dependent on next week’s farmers’ market or the electronic cashiers at the supermarket.”

Joel Salatin

“You can spend your whole life traveling around the world searching for the Garden of Eden, or you can create it in your backyard.”
